Fit & Fabric Guide
One page for every fit and fabric question we sell against: measure first, pick the height for your shoes, pick the fibre for the job, and know exactly what “Random” means before you buy.
1. Measure first
Two measurements decide almost every sock purchase: your shoe size, and the circumference of your calf at its widest point (for knee-high and thigh-high styles, measure where the top band will sit). Wrap a flexible tape flat against the skin — snug, not tight — and measure both legs; use the larger number.
| If you wear… | Then check… |
|---|---|
| Boots or tall shoes | Crew, knee-high or thigh-high heights, so the sock clears the top of the footwear. |
| Trainers or low shoes | Ankle or crew heights. |
| A wider calf | Your calf measurement against the product’s size range on its spec table, where a verified size range exists, before ordering knee-high or thigh-high styles. |
2. Heights explained
| Ankle | Sits at or just above the ankle bone. Suits trainers and low shoes. |
|---|---|
| Crew | Sits mid-calf. The all-purpose height: everyday shoes, boots and work footwear. |
| Knee-High | Sits just below the knee. Suits tall boots; coverage for cold weather and long days on your feet. |
| Thigh-High | Sits above the knee, on the thigh. Fit depends on your thigh measurement at the band — measure first (§1). |
3. Fabrics, honestly
| Wool blend | Chosen for warmth. Wool insulates and still feels warm in damp conditions, and it moves moisture away from the skin. The trade-off: wool asks for gentler washing (§5). Blending wool with other fibres balances warmth against durability and care. |
|---|---|
| Combed cotton | Combing removes shorter cotton fibres before spinning, for a smoother yarn and a softer, more even fabric. Cotton is breathable and comfortable for everyday and mild-weather wear. The trade-off: cotton holds moisture and is not the fibre we recommend when warmth is the job. |
| Bamboo / viscose | Viscose spun from bamboo pulp, chosen for a smooth, soft hand-feel against the skin. A comfort fibre for everyday wear rather than an insulation fibre. |
Every product page states its fibre family in its spec table. Where a product’s exact composition has been verified, the product page states it; where it has not, we name the fibre family and omit the number rather than guess.
4. Match the sock to the need
| Work Boots | Crew or knee-high heights that clear the boot top, in wool blends for long shifts. Shop the Work Boots collection. |
|---|---|
| Running | Match the height to your shoes (ankle or crew) and, where a verified size range exists, check it on the spec table — a sock that slips is the wrong size, not a bad sock. Shop the Running collection. |
| Comfort | Softness first: combed cotton and bamboo/viscose families for all-day everyday wear. Shop the Comfort collection. |
| Cold Weather | Wool and wool blends, crew height and taller. Shop the Cold Weather collection. |
5. Care
- Wash socks inside out, with similar colours, on a gentle cycle.
- Wool blends: use a cool, gentle wash and avoid high-heat drying — heat is what felts and shrinks wool.
- Skip fabric softener on performance and wool socks; it coats the fibres and dulls how they handle moisture.
- Dry flat or on a line where you can; it keeps elastic and shape working longer.
- Follow the care line on each product’s spec table when it differs from the above.
6. Random & Assorted, explained
Colors are selected at random and may vary.
On a Random pack, we pick the colours from the family’s stocked colours when your order is packed — you are choosing the family, fabric and pack size, not the colours. “Assorted” packs are put together the same way from the family’s colour range. The photos show the pack size you will receive and the kind of colours in the range; they are not a promise of a specific colour mix.
Want one exact colour? Choose the family’s 1 Pair — Choose Your Colour listing instead, pick the colour yourself, and pay the single-pair price. Want the best value per pair and happy for us to pick? The multi-pair packs are built for that.
7. Questions
- The size range on a product — where is it?
- In the spec table on the product page, where a verified size range exists, alongside fibre, height and pack count. If a product does not state a size range there, we have not verified it yet — ask us rather than guess.
- Can I choose colours in a Random pack?
- Colors are selected at random and may vary. For a specific colour, use the family’s 1-pair colour listing (§6).
- What if the fit is wrong?
- Unworn socks in their original packaging can be returned — the returns policy page carries the current window and the steps. Measuring first (§1) prevents most fit returns.
- Why does one family cost less per pair in a bigger pack?
- Pack pricing: every product card and pack ladder shows the per-pair price so you can compare pack sizes like with like.
